Fall Arts preview (jazz): Lake George fest next on horizon

The Lake George Jazz Weekend is up next for jazz aficionados.

• The concert series A Place for Jazz kicked off its fall season on Friday with the Scott Hamilton Quartet. Upcoming events include the Steven Kroon Latin Jazz Sextet (Sept. 23) , vocalist Denise Donatelli (Oct. 7), Joe Barna’s Sketches of Influence (Oct. 21) and the Christian Jacob Trio (Nov. 4).

• The Lake George Jazz Weekend, Sept. 17-18, features several outstanding performers, including The Brubeck Brothers, The Diva Jazz Orchestra, The Gary McFarland Legacy Ensemble with Dick Oatts, and the Amina Figarova Sextet. And it’s free.

• On Oct. 9, at the DoubleTree Hotel in Schenectady, The Swingtime Jazz Society will present The Dadtet, a group of local musicians all of whom have become recent fathers: Brian Patneaude. Dave Fisk, Ben O’Shea, David Gleason. Mike Lawrence and Andy Hearn. They play a spirited mix of jazz standards and originals.

• On Oct. 18, The Empire Jazz Orchestra will present its fall concert at Schenectady County Community College, featuring arrangements and compositions by Benny Carter, Oliver Nelson, Sammy Nestico, Keith Pray Jim Corigliano and others.

• On Dec. 9, The College of Saint Rose in Albany will present a stellar trio of alto saxophonist Steve Wilson, pianist George Cables and bassist Ira Coleman, all of whom are masters of their instruments.
