Schenectady police on Tuesday evening took a man into custody who may be connected with a shooting Monday afternoon on Schenectady Street.
Police spokesman Sgt. Matthew Dearing said a man wanted by police was seen in the Holland Road area early Tuesday evening. The man exited through the front door of the row house at 1040 Holland with his hands up at 6:08 p.m., about an hour after a dozen heavily armed police surrounded the structure, calling repeatedly over a loudspeaker for the man to emerge. He was immediately taken into custody.
Dearing said the man was wanted by police but couldn’t confirm there was a connection to the Schenectady Street shooting a day earlier. An officer on the scene said there was a connection.
At about 1:45 p.m. on Monday, a caller reported a man possibly bleeding from the head at 308 Schenectady St. Police responded and found a gunshot victim inside the first-floor apartment at that address.
Police identified the victim Tuesday morning as Kenny G. Barros, 47, of Schenectady.
Barros was listed in serious but stable condition after the shooting, Dearing said, He was at Albany Medical Center as of Tuesday.
Police were trying to determine the location of the shooting — whether it happened inside the residence, outside or at some other location.
The building in which the victim was found is a two-family house. It is about 0.3 mile from the Schenectady Street home where Medina Knowles, 19, died from a gunshot wound in September. Police have charged Raekwon Stover, 19, who previously had dated Knowles, in connection with her killing.
Knowles’ death spurred a communitywide effort to halt violence in the Hamilton Hill neighborhood, which has seen a spate of homicides in recent years.
