Mom gently shames daughter in ‘excuse’ letter to school

Kids. These. Days.

It snowed too much Thursday morning for a sixth-grade North Colonie student to brave temperatures in the mid-20s and walk two minutes to school.

So her mom, Jessica Reilley, wrote an “excuse” letter to her school — but didn’t let the chance to publicly but playfully shame her daughter slide by unutilized.

“This letter is to excuse Madison from school today,” Reilley wrote in an actual letter to her daughter’s teacher and school principal, explaining why Madison wouldn’t make it to class. “Due to the whopping less than an inch of snow today, she feels it is too much of a blizzard condition to walk the less than 2 minute walk there.”

Mom, who was at work and unable to force Madison out the door, said kids these days are “pampered and spoiled, absolutely.” In her note to school, Reilley wrote that apparently Madison’s $120 Ugg Boots and $100 down jacket weren’t enough to protect her from the sole-deep snows that blanketed the Capital Region. And how could Madison possibly be expected to wear a hat and gloves and risk a bad hair day?

“Why not shame our kids a little once and while if they do it to us all the time?” Reilley said.

Reilley told Madison’s teacher that she hoped she had three hours of make-up work and promised that she would only let one free day slide. “She will be in school tomorrow!” Reilley guaranteed in the note.

And Madison was already hedging against dad finding out.

“She wanted to know if I had told dad yet. . . . She knew she would get in trouble,” Reilley said.
