Siena suffers another road loss, at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD — The road woes continued Thursday for the Siena College men’s basketball team, which lost 84-64 to Hofstra.

The defeat continued the Saints’ winless road streak this season, pushing it to eight. Siena has won all of its home games.

Nico Clareth led Siena with 16 points, but only made 5 of 15 shots. Lavon Long and Javion Ogunyemi each added 12 points for the Saints, while Marquis Wright missed 10 of his 13 shots in scoring eight points.

Hofstra received a game-high 21 points from Deron Powers, while four other players scored at least 10.

Siena (4-8) quickly found itself down against Hofstra (8-5), as the Saints missed 15 of their first 21 shots from the field. Hofstra had a lead as large as 16 points midway through the first half, but settled for a
38-29 halftime advantage after the Saints went into intermission on a 28-12 run.

But Siena never seriously challenged in the second half. After Hofstra’s lead shrunk to 40-33 a minute into the period, the Pride responded with a 15-4 run to firm up control. From there, Hofstra always kept at least a nine-point lead — and the Pride led by at least a dozen points for the final 15:48.

While Siena out-rebounded Hofstra 42-40, the Saints struggled to defend the 3-point line. Hofstra made 11 of 21 3-pointers and shot 27 of 27 overall, while Siena was 2 of 14 from deep and 24 of 70 overall. Clareth was the only Siena player to make a 3-pointer, shooting 2 of 7 from distance.

As a team, Siena has only made 29 of 122 3-pointers during its past eight games.

Besides Powers’ 21 points and eight assists, Hofstra also received 10 points and 15 rebounds from Rokas Gustys, the nation’s leading rebounder.

The Saints’ 64 points were a season-low output. Siena’s previous low this season was 66 points, achieved in a 23-point win against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

While the defeat denied Siena its first road win of the season, it also kept the Saints from registering its first consecutive victories. After each of Siena’s four wins this season, the Saints have lost at least the following two games.

Siena next plays Thursday against Vermont at Times Union Center. That game will finish off the Saints’ non-conference slate before their return to MAAC play in January.
