MILESTONE WATCH
Middleburgh junior Peyton Olsen scored 30 points and reached 1,000 for his varsity career in Tuesday’s 64-55 Western Athletic Conference loss at Canajoharie.
Olsen upped his total to 1,012 and joined previous Middleburgh aces Chris Hubbard (1,025), Gary Hamm (1,349) and Tim Standhart (1,448).
Olsen started the season with a 43-point outing in an 86-82 non-league loss at Catskill in which he nailed a school-record 10 3-point baskets.
FIRST WIN
The Waterford-Halfmoon boys basketball team beat Tamarac Tuesday 58-45 for its first win as a member of the Wasaren League after five setbacks.
Senior Kyle Fairclough scored 35 points for Waterford-Halfmoon, which, along with Saratoga Central Catholic, joined the Wasaren League this school year after competing in the Central Hudson Valley League and Western Athletic Conference, respectively.
Fairclough has been the Fordians’ top offensive wewapon with double digits in each of their nine games with a high of 38.
BIG NUMBERS
Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons junior Zyir Beverly scored 30 points in an 86-76 first-round loss to Catskill and a record-setting 38 in an 80-75 overtime consolation loss to host Mohonasen at the John F. Kirvin Basketball Tournament last week.
Beverly had scored over 20 points in six of seven games before earning an all-tournament team spot with his stellar offensive output. With his 38, he topped the tourney record of 34 points set by Phil DeCarlo of Mohonasen in 1991 (vs. Bishop Gibbons) and tied by Terence Coppola of Scotia-Glenville in 2002 (vs. Mohonasen).
“He can shoot the three and dunk the ball and do everything in between,” first-year coach Dan Bologna said of the forward, one of several newcomers on the ND-BG roster. “I think he’s a top 10 player in the area.”
