GE to cut 35 jobs at Schenectady plant

General Electric is cutting 35 jobs based in Schenectady as it consolidates the clean energy branch of its business.

“Current, powered by GE,” is the focus of realignment efforts within the company’s energy storage unit, resulting in the 35 layoffs in Schenectady and six elsewhere in the Current business

GE on Friday filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification notice with the state Department of Labor, citing economic reasons for its cuts. The company provided a layoff date of April 12 for the affected employees, according to the filing.

Nikolas Noel, a spokesman for Current, said in an email Sunday the company is working to help those being laid off find jobs elsewhere in the company.

“As part of these changes, we are realigning the energy storage unit across other parts of GE, and we will continue to work with impacted employees during the transition,” the company said in a statement. “Moving forward, Current will partner with other GE businesses to bring storage to our commercial and industrial customers as the market continues to develop.”

The region remains home to GE Power, GE Renewable Energy, GE Global Research, steam turbine and generator manufacturing, a medical imaging factory and more. In addition to the thousands working at the company’s 639-acre campus in Schenectady and Rotterdam, about 2,000 others work at the Global Research campus in Niskayuna.
