BALLSTON SPA — Riley Walz, a freshman at Ballston Spa High School, was home Tuesday afternoon, enjoying a school snow day, when he got the big news on Twitter and Facebook.

Riley, age 14, is the winner of the top prize in the national YouTube contest “Living the Example,” sponsored by Mentor Foundation USA.

For the competition, teens across the country submitted one-minute videos about their lives that would inspire other teens. The top five videos then vied for votes on Facebook.

Riley won an all-expenses-paid trip to the YouTube headquarters in Los Angeles for himself and one other person and a $500 gift certificate to H&M clothing stores.

“It’s really cool,” Riley said Tuesday.

His mom, Stacey Walz, a kindergarten teacher at Ballston Spa’s Wood Road Elementary School, will be his travel companion.

As for the gift certificate, Riley wants to use it to help families in need.

“We could buy coats for kids in our school district,” he said.
