SCHENECTADY – Galesi Group CEO David Buicko describes the Mohawk Harbor development in Schenectady as a place to live, work, eat and play.

On Tuesday, officials announced an addition to that list: drink.

Druthers Brewing will open a new location this summer on the waterfront of Schenectady’s Mohawk Harbor. The new location for the Capital Region brewery, which has brewpubs in Saratoga and Albany, is expected to open in July and will operate out of the main floor of the Riverhouse apartment complex off of Erie Boulevard. The business is the first tenant announced for the Mohawk Harbor site, except for restaurants at Rivers Casino & Resort.

“It just seemed like a really good fit,” Druthers CEO Chris Martell said. “Once we saw the waterfront location, we just imagined having a nice beer garden out on the waterfront.”

Druthers Brewing opened in Saratoga Springs in 2012 and expanded to Albany in 2015. The Schenectady business will take up 8,000 square feet and will employ roughly 70 people, Martell said. The waterfront space will be similar to the Saratoga Springs Druthers outdoor area, he said, but it will be situated along the harbor and will include outdoor seating.

The menus at Druthers’ Saratoga and Albany locations vary a bit, and the same will be true in Schenectady, Martell said.

Local leaders were on hand for the announcement, and they described Druthers as a perfect fit for the location. Buicko said the developer actually turned down other tenants that wanted the space Druthers will occupy.

“It’s not about drinking; it’s about food. It’s about family entertainment, and they complement what’s here,” Buicko said. “This was to complement what’s already in the casino (and downtown), not compete with it.”

The business will be within walking distance of Rivers Casino & Resort, which is scheduled to open at noon on Feb. 8. Other projects on the harbor site, including two office and retail complexes, are set to open this summer.

The Riverhouse, which can be seen behind the Marriott from Erie Boulevard, will consist of 206 luxury apartments, with businesses on the main floor. In total, there will be six or seven retail tenants in the building.

The complex is scheduled to open in July, and Buicko said the company is already garnering interest from prospective residents.

He said he expects the brewpub will be popular among Riverhouse residents who can just stop downstairs for a quick drink or bite to eat. He added that he doesn’t expect Druthers to disturb any residents, since it won’t be open late into the night.

Druthers’ other locations are open until 11 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, and until midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Monthly rent for a studio apartment at Riverhouse starts at $1,000. A one-bedroom apartment  starts at $1,500, and two-bedroom apartments cost anywhere from $2,000-$3,300, depending on the floor plan and location within the building, according to the Riverhouse website.
