Ballston Spa Middle School will be closed Monday for cleanup of damage from a fire that broke out in a mechanical room Sunday afternoon.
Multiple crews responded shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday to a report of a fire at Ballston Spa High School, which shares a campus with and is connected to the middle school. The fire was small and caused minor equipment damage, but smoke and water damage spread to other parts of the building, said Ballston Spa Fire Chief David Whittredge.
The middle school will be closed Monday, the Ballston Spa Central School District announced just after 4 p.m. The high school will operate normally.
Crews arrived at the complex Sunday afternoon and found a mechanical room with some janitorial supplies and equipment on fire. The fire itself took only about 15 minutes to put out, Whittredge said, but crews remained on the scene into the early evening to ventilate the building.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, Whittredge said.
The damaged equipment is salvageable, he said, but smoke spread through portions of both the middle school and high school, including hallways, classrooms and locker rooms.
Several people were inside the school when the alarm went off, but everyone made it out and no injuries were reported, Whittredge said.
