Grammy Award-winning band Blues Traveler will headline SummerNight 2017 on Friday, July 14, in downtown Schenectady.

The free family-friendly block party will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. on State Street between Broadway and Barrett Street and on the Jay Street Pedestrian Mall. It will feature live music, games and food.

The GE Main Stage on State Street will rock with the sounds of Schenectady County’s 2015 and 2016 Battle of the Bands winners Moriah Formica and Lucy. Closing out the show at 8:30 will be Blues Traveler. Price Chopper & Market 32 fireworks will cap the evening at about 9:45 p.m.

Blues Traveler, which formed in Princeton, N.J. in 1987, plays blues rock, psychedlic rock, folk rock, soul and southern rock. Fronted by lead singer John Popper, the group is known for its improvisational live shows.

Additional musical performances by local musicians will take place on Jay Street and in the MVP Health Care Kids Corner.

“I really couldn’t imagine surpassing the level of talent we had last year, but I think we have,” said Cathy Gatta, chair of the Schenectady County Legislature’s Committee on Tourism, Arts and Special Events. The Gin Blossoms headlined last year’s event.

“Schenectady County is proud to once again bring the Capital Region’s biggest summer block party to our downtown with Schenectady County SummerNight,” said Gatta. “Every year this event gets bigger and better, and this year will be no different with Blues Traveler headlining.”

A sand sculpture will again be part of the festivities, and Villa Italia is sponsoring the Third Annual “Schenectady County Celebrity Cannoli Eating Contest. Downtown restaurants and vendors will be offering a variety of food, drinks and desserts during the event.
