Malta man faces 25 years after being convicted of burglary

Will be sentenced June 19

BALLSTON SPA — A Malta man was convicted Monday of forcing his way into a woman’s residence last year and threatening her with a knife.

Jody Haynes, 35, was convicted of first-degree burglary and fourth-degree possession of a weapon following about 90 minutes of deliberations by a Saratoga County jury, according to District Attorney Karen A. Heggen.

Haynes was accused of obtaining personal information on a co-worker, including her address in Malta. He went to her residence on June 7, 2016, and knocked on her door. He then hid when the victim opened the door, appeared, and forced his way in, threatening her with a knife. The woman was able to talk Haynes into leaving, then went to the Malta state police barracks.

“Things could have ended much differently if the victim had not been as strong and smart as she was,” Heggen said.

The jury heard six witnesses over four days. Haynes faces 25 years in prison when sentenced by County Court Judge James A. Murphy III on June 19.
