A giant in the Capital Region restaurant and catering industry is taking on a partner that’s even larger.

Mazzone Hospitality announced Tuesday that Restaurant Associates will invest in its catering and restaurant divisions.

New York City-based Restaurant Associates is a subsidiary of Compass Group, The Americas Division. It operates in more than 100 East Coast locations.

Mazzone Hospitality has seven restaurants, operates 23 dining facilities at 16 locations and runs nine banquet/catering facilities. It has 600 to 1,100 employees, depending on whether it is in its quiet or busy catering season.

When the agreement takes effect, anticipated in July, Mazzone’s catering and business dining operations will operate under the new banner Mazzone Hospitality LLC. Founder Angelo Mazzone will remain at the helm of the new entity and all current employees are expected to retain their jobs.

The majority of the existing Mazzone restaurant properties will remain closely held by Mazzone and operate independently of Mazzone Hospitality LLC. These include Angelo’s 677 Prime, Aperitivo Bistro, Tala Bistro, Fish at 30 Lake, and Prime at Saratoga National.

Angelo’s Tavolo and Angelo’s Prime Bar + Grill will operate under the new banner.

In an interview with The Gazette in January, Angelo Mazzone noted the competitive pressure his operation faced from companies many times its size, with many times more resources. He described a potential scenario to ensure continued growth — affiliating with one of these larger companies while retaining local control — similar to the agreement announced this week.

He said Tuesday that this new agreement would give his company the resources to grow locally and regionally, and to pursue opportunities with larger institutions such as universities, hospitals and senior living facilities.

“I’m excited to announce this partnership because Restaurant Associates shares the same core values that we do, and will provide us with the infrastructure, systems and capital to sustain and expand upon the level of growth we’ve been so fortunate to achieve,” Mazzone said in a news release Tuesday. “This partnership puts us in the position to reach even more people with our signature level of service. Our day-to-day operations will not change.”

Mazzone Hospitality LLC will oversee catering operations at the Albany Capital Center, Empire State Plaza, 90 State and Cornerstone at the Plaza in Albany; Hall of Springs in Saratoga Springs; Hilton Garden Inn in Clifton Park; Key Hall at Proctors in Schenectady; and Glen Sanders Mansion in Scotia. The division will also continue to cater private weddings, fundraisers and corporate or social events.
