SARATOGA SPRINGS — A Henry Street eatery and pub with a Belgian theme has been seized by the state for failing to pay more than $200,000 in taxes.

Orange signs reading “SEIZED” were posted on The Merry Monk — which opened at 84 Henry St. in February 2013 — on Tuesday. The signs indicate that the shuttered restaurant is now in the state’s possession.

The original Merry Monk, which opened in 2012 at 90 N. Pearl St. in Albany, was also seized.

The Saratoga Springs location owed more than $242,000 in taxes, according to the state’s delinquent tax database. The Albany restaurant owed more than $217,000.

A Daily Gazette reviewer described the Saratoga location shortly after it opened as having tasteful decor without being stuffy, and pub-like without being tacky. The restaurant offered Belgian fare, like mussels and waffles, and a variety of Belgian beer on tap and in bottles.

The latest post on the Saratoga Springs location’s Facebook page is from April 29 and promotes a Mother’s Day brunch special for Sunday, featuring live jazz music and an all-you-can eat buffet.

The owners could not be immediately reached for comment.
