The Amsterdam teen killed Saturday when he was struck by a vehicle stepped into oncoming traffic, Fulton County Sheriff Richard Giardino said.
Ryan Frye, 15, died about 9 p.m. after attempting to cross State Highway 29 in Broadalbin.
“Him and his cousin were crossing the road to go to Stewart’s and they started to go and the cousin saw the car coming and said, ‘Ryan look out,’” Giardino said. “Ryan either didn’t hear him or was too far in the road.”
“He might have misjudged the timing and thought he could make it,” he added.
The driver of the vehicle — Sandra Fraisier, 80, of Johnstown — was not at fault, Giardino said. She had no alcohol in her system and had a green light at the time. Giardino said Fraisier stopped her vehicle to comfort Frye’s cousin, who is also 15 years old.
“It’s just a tragedy for everybody,” Giardino said. “The sheriff’s department’s thoughts go out to the Frye family and also to this lady who is 80 years old. It was just unavoidable in the circumstances.”
An obituary for Frye said he was a sophomore at the Broadalbin-Perth Central School District and played baseball and football.
“Ryan loved cars and four-wheeling as well as fishing,” the obituary stated. “He was a passionate martial arts student since age 5 at Martial Arts & Me. … Ryan was a huge animal lover and loved to care for his three dogs, PJ, Amber, and Marley.”
The district said on its website that the school community is mourning Frye’s death and that counselors are on hand to speak with students.
Frye’s funeral was held Wednesday at Baptist Church of Northville. He was buried in East Galway Cemetery. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help the family cover the cost of his funeral.
Frye was the second area teen to die Saturday after being hit by a vehicle.
Mariah Surgick, 18, of Schenectady was killed on the Thruway about 4 a.m. Police said she was a passenger in her friend’s vehicle driving on the Thruway when the two got in an argument. The friend pulled over near Exit 25 and Surgick exited the vehicle. That’s when police said she ran into oncoming traffic.
Surgick’s funeral is being held at 10 a.m. Friday at New Day Christian Empowerment Center on Chrisler Avenue in Schenectady. A GoFundMe page to assist Surgick’s family with funeral costs has also been organized.
