MALTA — GlobalFoundries said layoffs recently announced at its East Fishkill and Burlington facilities have not expanded to its Malta plant.
The cutbacks followed other measures this spring to increase the company’s cost competitiveness, including reductions in expenses and a voluntary retirement program.
Response to the voluntary program was good, but not good enough, so some involuntary cuts were made as well. These totaled a few dozen in East Fishkill, New York, and fewer than a dozen in Burlington, Vermont.
No involuntary job cuts were made at the Fab 8 computer chip factory in Malta because of its success in reducing expenses and cutting costs.
A similar situation played out at Fab 8 in October 2015, when not enough workers there accepted voluntary buyouts and the company imposed a “relatively small” number of layoffs.
