SCHENECTADY — Rivers Casino & Resort is hosting another job fair, this one focused on filling roughly 150 positions, many of them at the soon-to-open hotel.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 3 in the casino’s event center. The Landing Hotel is on schedule to open in July and will employ about 60. An official opening date has not been set.
Available hotel jobs include front desk supervisors, front desk agents, housekeeping supervisors and room attendants.
Rivers is also trying to fill around 75 casino positions, including table game dealers, cage cashiers, food servers, cooks, security officers, valet attendants and more. General Manager Mary Cheeks said the increased staffing is mostly due to the expected uptick in customers that will come with the hotel opening.
“Some team members have elected to go part-time rather than full-time, so it’s a bit of that, but more of a ramp-up for our volume,” she said.
Some of the hiring is due to customer feedback. For example, some patrons told Rivers staff that other facilities have self-serve beverage stations. In response, Rivers is looking to add more drink servers, Cheeks said.
The casino employs roughly 900 people, with close to half of them residing in Schenectady County, according to data provided in April by the New York State Gaming Commission. A small number of people commute an hour each way, with the data showing employees coming from South Cairo, Valatie and Fort Plain.
In April, casino officials said about 70 employees either quit or were fired during the casino’s first two months of operation. That 7 percent turnover rate is below the industry average, they said, and is expected to stabilize now that the casino is open and can give prospective hires a more realistic preview of the job.
