WASHINGTON — A 22-year-old man with an unregistered assault rifle used his truck to strike two police officers and another man in northwest Washington on Thursday evening, according to local law enforcement officials.

The man, Brandon Lord Figures-Mormon, was charged with assault with the intent to kill and unlawful possession of an unregistered firearm, officials said. Another man in the car was arrested, they said.

Detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department were still trying to determine Friday morning what motivated the man to hit the officers with his truck, officials said.

The Metropolitan Police Department — not the FBI — has the lead in the investigation, a sign that the authorities have not determined that terrorism was a factor.

One of the Metropolitan Police Department officers who was injured was hospitalized and is in critical but stable condition, officials said. The other officer is in fair condition, they added.

The third man who was struck by the truck — an employee of the city’s Department of Transportation — was treated at a hospital and released.

Terrorists have increasingly used vehicles to attack civilians. Last week, a van careered onto the side along London Bridge, mowing down pedestrians. Last July, a man driving a truck drove through a crowd in Nice, France, killing more than 80 people.
