SCHENECTADY — A city store owner under-reported sales to the state Department of Taxation and Finance by more than $550,000 over five years, authorities said.
The result, according to papers filed in court, is the store failed to pay more than $3,000 in sales taxes it should have paid, authorities said.
Saleh Zaid, 38, of Selkirk — of USA Wine and Liquor, 800 Albany St. — now faces a host of charges, including third-degree grand larceny and multiple counts of first-degree offering a false instrument for filing. Zaid was charged in the past week.
Zaid is accused of under-reporting sales from December 2011 to November 2016. The state came up with the $550,000 under-reporting figure by reviewing subpoenaed purchase invoices from third-party vendors who supplied the store and comparing the numbers with reported sales, according to papers filed in court.
Zaid allegedly admitted to the state investigator that the store carries no inventory other than what is displayed for sale and has not sold or transferred inventory to any other location, according to papers.
