A Schenectady man was sentenced to almost 5 years in prison Monday for possessing a firearm as a felon.
Lawrence Giggetts, 37, was sentenced in U.S. District Court to 58 months after he admitted to having an inoperable .25-caliber semi-automatic pistol. He had previously been convicted of felony reckless endangerment.
Giggetts was arrested on the weapons charge in 2015 near the corner of Crane Street and Sixth Avenue. He had defaced the weapon, which was unloaded, so the serial numbers were unreadable.
The weapon was inoperable, too, because it did not have a firing pin. However, it still qualified as a firearm under federal law, according to a news release.
Giggetts was also sentenced to three years of supervised release. The Schenectady Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the case.
