CAIRO — Shenendehowa High School graduate Kevin Huerter of Maryland scored four points and shared the team lead with five assists to help the United States beat Iran 108-48 Saturday in its Group D pool opener at the FIBA U19 World Cup in Cairo, Egypt.
The rising sophomore guard also had four rebounds and one of the United States’ 10 steals in his 14 minutes off the bench.
Huerter collected three assists and scored his first basket on a lob in the final minute of the opening half as the Americans built a 46-24 lead. Their advantage grew to 76-37 after three quarters.
Team USA, coached by Kentucky coach John Calipari, was led by Kentucky’s Hamidou Diallo, who started over Huerter at shooting guard and scored 17 points. Purdue’s Carsen Edwards and top-five 2018 recruit Cameron Reddish combined for 29 points. Team USA held a 52-29 rebounding advantage, and outscored Iran 60-28 in the paint.
Huerter was a key contributor last summer for the United States’ FIBA U18 gold medal-winning team, and is one of only four players on the U19 team with noteworthy college experience. He led Shenendehowa to a New York championship as a junior, and spearheaded its drive the state final four as a senior when he received several player of the year awards.
Team USA will play Angola Sunday.
