SARATOGA SPRINGS — A 2.5 megawatt solar array built on a capped landfill on Weibel Avenue will go live next week, according to city Finance Commissioner Michele Madigan.
The 7,632-panel project, called Spa Solar Park, was built by Onyx Renewable Partners and is projected to satisfy 40 percent of city facilities’ energy demand, she said. Crews broke ground on the project in April; National Grid workers were testing the panels, installed across 43 acres, this week.
“This is a win-win all around, and we are very excited to see the project go live and start providing renewable solar energy,” Madigan said in a prepared statement. “The landfill is city-owned property with otherwise limited use.”
The panels were installed at no cost to the city through a 20-year power purchase agreement with the New York City-based Onyx, which operates under The Blackstone Group private equity firm.
Madigan estimated the solar panels will save the city at least $100,000 on its annual utility bill.
