Gloversville police have arrested a father who they said punched his baby in the head, fracturing its skull, according to a police report.

Andrew Allen, 31, is charged with felony counts of assault, attempted assault and reckless endangerment after police said he punched the infant in the head after a fight with his wife. The baby was taken to Nathan Littauer Hospital, then airlifted to Albany Medical Center for further treatment. Police on Monday would say only that the baby was in “stable” condition; further information was not available.

Police responded about 7 a.m. Saturday to the emergency room at Nathan Littauer Hospital for a report of an infant with a traumatic head injury. They talked with the mother, who indicated Allen punched the baby after a domestic incident, police said.

Gloversville police, with assistance from New York State Police and the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office, later searched an apartment at 6 Cherry St., where the assault is believed to have taken place, police said. The address is just a few blocks from Gloversville High School.

Following the apartment search and interviews with witnesses, police located, interviewed and arrested Allen, authorities said.

He was arraigned and is being held at Fulton County jail on $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond.
