Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria will cost America $350 billion, or the effective equivalent of $1,000 for every man, woman and child in America. It will be more expensive than Sandy and Katrina combined. Where does the money for repairs originate, because most residents of Houston don’t have flood insurance and Puerto Rico is bankrupt? What is astounding is that Houston has been hit with three 500-year floods in the past 20 years.
We are told that Americans will be willing to do any job if the price is right. Will they work to rebuild Houston when temperatures hit 100 degrees with high humidity? This is no idle speculation when we start deporting millions of Mexicans and Central Americans.
This leads to the larger issue of why do we allow Americans to build in flood plains? Schoharie residents are well aware of the fact that many of them live on a flood plain, which, by its very nature, tends to flood.
Most of them cannot afford flood insurance or will not purchase it. Many people with standard insurance policies don’t realize that these policies don’t cover flood damage.
While we can’t account for all the vagaries of nature, climate change is proving to be a cruel mistress.
