On Oct. 10 I had an opportunity to address the Schenectady City Council with regards to the mayor’s proposed capital budget.
More specifically, I addressed the $600,000 being invested in the Central Park A Diamond — as I learned that night, also known as Buck Ewing Field.
The mayor and council members John Polimeni and Vince Riggi noted it’s an investment in America’s pastime, a source of revenue and part of the bigger picture.
OK. But who’s going to maintain the new artificial turf field, schedule the tournaments and make sure this field doesn’t meet the same fate as its predecessor? Volunteers? What’s the plan?
I can only hope the mayor and City Council are equally as generous when it comes to organic community-inspired investment opportunities such as the miracle on Craig Street and professional cricket fields in Schenectady.
