SCHENECTADY — Mayor Gary McCarthy announced Monday that he has appointed a new city public safety commissioner.

McCarthy said he will announce the appointment Tuesday during a news conference in the City Hall Rotunda.

The commissioner’s post has been open since the August death of longtime Commissioner Wayne Bennett.

The state Court of Appeals ruled earlier this month that the city’s public safety commissioner has sole discretion over police discipline in the city, a ruling that came after years of legal arguments by the city and the union that represents police in the city.
