Tourism conference coming to Rivers Casino

About 300 tourism professionals are expected to attend

SCHENECTADY — A statewide tourism conference will take place in April at the Rivers Casino & Resort at Mohawk Harbor.

Officials announced Friday that the New York State Tourism Association will hold its annual “I Love New York” Empire State Tourism Conference at the casino from April 23-25. About 300 tourism professionals are expected to attend. This will be the first time the conference has been held in Schenectady.

It will expose tourism officials from around the state to the city and Schenectady County and is the sort of thing local tourism officials were hoping for when the casino opened in February.

“When the Schenectady County Legislature created the Convention and Visitor Bureau, we did it to facilitate these kind of conferences in Schenectady County,” said county Legislator Jeffrey McDonald, who is also president of the Convention and Visitors’ Bureau.

“With all the wonderful attractions that are continuing to develop in Schenectady, it’s especially exciting to welcome a tourism-themed conference to the county,” said Becky Daniels, executive director of Discover Schenectady.

The three-day conference involves workshops on tourism-related topics, with activities in the casino’s 10,000-square-foot event center, which can be partitioned into smaller spaces. The casino has lodging, dining and entertainment on-site, but conference organizers said those participating will have time to visit other places to eat and other attractions in Schenectady County.
