Moriah Formica's run on 'The Voice' comes to an end

Moriah Formica’s weeks-long run on NBC’s singing competition “The Voice” came to an end Wednesday night in the final round of the playoffs on the nationally televised show.

Judge and coach Miley Cyrus had six singers remaining on Team Miley, and could only choose three to advance to the final 12.

Cyrus selected Janice Freeman, Ashland Craft and Brooke Simpson to advance, while eliminating Formica, Adam Pearce and Karli Webster.

Just moments before being eliminated, Formica, a 17-year-old Shaker High School student, praised superstar singer Cyrus for giving her confidence: “You told me ‘don’t be afraid to mess up. Always do what feels right.'”

On Wednesday night’s show, Formica sang Beth Hart’s “World Without You.” Before the appearance, Cyrus coached Formica on the song.

“I want you to heavy it up a little, give it more grit,” she told Formica. “Don’t be afraid to let people see your tough exterior.”

Armed with her guitar, Formica then sang the tune for the judges and national audience.

Said judge Blake Shelton afterward: “There aren’t a lot of deep-voiced females like you.”

Formica is scheduled to perform Friday, Nov. 24, at Lucky Strike in Crossgates Mall.

The Gazette has followed Formica’s career since she was 14. The musician lived in Delmar and Halfmoon before moving with her family to Latham. She received much of her early music training at Modern Day Music in Clifton Park. In 2016, she performed outdoors at Schenectady SummerNight with her band.
