Regional races offer fun for good causes

Here are some regional themed running events slated for Thanksgiving.

Schenectady

Race: 36th Annual Cardiac Classic

Where/When: The first event starts at 8 a.m. at the Central Park Pavilion

Distance: There is a 2-mile wellness walk, a 5K run and a 1-mile Duck Pond Fun Run.

Cause: The Visiting Nurse Service of Northeastern NY

Registration: Must be done in advance. Online registration can be completed at raceentry.com or through Ellis Medicine’s website, at ellismedicine.org/cardiac-classic. Registration can also be completed in person between 2 and 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Ellis Medicine’s McClellan Street Health Center, 600 McClellan St.

Saratoga Springs

Race: The 16th annual Christopher Dailey Turkey Trot

Where/When: The race starts at 8:30 a.m. at City Hall in Saratoga Springs.

Distance: 5K

Cause: The Christopher Dailey Foundation raises money to support local youth sports organizations.

Registration: Must be completed online or in person before the event. Online registration at ZippyReg.com must be completed by noon Tuesday. Cost is $27. In-person registration can be done between 4 and 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Saratoga Hilton Hotel.

Glens Falls

Race: The James P. Hinchliffe 5k Run/Walk for ALS

Where/When: 8:30 a.m. Thanksgiving, with registration at the Cool Insuring Center and the race beginning on Church Street.

Cause: This race was founded in 2011 by Matt and Dillon Hinchliffe, and 100 percent of the proceeds are donated to the ALS Association Upstate New York Chapter.

Registration: 7 to 8:15 a.m. at the Glens Falls Civic Center the day of the race ($25), or, with advance registration (link can be found at https://www.jphals5k.com): $15 for those 18 and younger and $18 for adults.

Lake Placid

Race: Adirondack Health ninth annual Turkey Trot

Where/When: Race starts at 8:30 a.m. at the Speed Skating Oval.

Distance: Flat 5k walk/run

Cause: Proceeds benefit the local school food pantries and Adirondack Health’s Fit for Life Program.

Registration: Pre-registration must be done by Tuesday and can be completed online at active.com. There is an online-only rate of $75 for groups of four. Kids 12 or younger can participate for free and do not need to register. Participants are asked to bring three non-perishable food items for donation to local food pantries. Race-day registration begins at 6:30 a.m., closes at 8 a.m. and costs $30 per person and $100 for a group of four.

Cohoes

Race: 54th annual Turkey Trot

Where/When: Kids races start at 8:30 a.m. in front of City Hall. There are also races for “intermediates,” “juniors,” “biddies,” and “Pee wee” age groups. Details available at cohoes.com.

Distance: Distances vary by age group, but a 3.5-mile run/walk starts at 9:30 a.m.

Cause: Participants are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to a local food pantry.

Registration: Free, though T-shirts are $10. Register online at zippyreg.com

Kingston

Race: Junior League of Kingston’s fifth annual Turkey Trot

Where/When: 8 a.m. at Dietz Stadium. Race ends in Forsyth Park

Distance: 5k and 2-mile run/walk events to choose from

Cause: The People’s Place Food Pantry

Bethlehem

Race: Our Towne Bethlehem Turkey Trot

Where/When: 9 a.m. at  Bethlehem Central Middle School (fireworks are at 7 p.m. Wednesday)

Distance: 5k

Cause: Bethlehem Food Pantry

Registration: Kids 10 and younger are admitted for free. Adults $30. Applications are available online at ourtownebethlehem.com

Clifton Park

Race: St. George’s sixth annual Turkey Trot/Antonio “Tony” Lauria Memorial 5K

Where/When: 8 a.m., at St. George’s Episcopal Church, 912 Route 146.

Distance: 5K run/walk

Cause: Church scholarship fund

Registration: Registration ends Wednesday and costs $25. Register online at runsignup.com.

Amsterdam

Race: Amsterdam Thanks4giving 5K Run/Walk and 1.5K Walk

Where/When: 9 a.m. for 5k run/walk and 9:15 a.m. for 1-mile walk, starting at Shuttleworth Park.

Distance: 5K walk/run or 1-mile walk

Cause: Proceeds benefit Dr. Tom Catena’s Mission work at the Mother of Mercy Hospital in the Nuba Mountains in Sudan.

Registration: $15 in advance, at amsterdamrun.com

Troy

Race: The Troy Turkey Trot

Where/When: 8 a.m. for 10k (Grade school mile at 9:30, “Turkey Walk” at 9:35, 5K at 10) 

Distance: 1-mile, 5k, 10k and “Turkey Walk”

Cause: Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, Joseph’s House & Shelter

Registration: Online registration at troyturkeytrot.com. Last-chance registration is 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Troy Atrium, second floor, on Fourth Street between Fulton and Broadway. Participants are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items.
