
SELDEN — In an epic final, Shenendehowa boys’ volleyball had its season ended in Saturday’s Division I state championship with a 25-19, 18-25, 25-16, 18-25, 19-17 loss to Penfield of Section V.
Earlier in the day, Shenendehowa made it out of semifinal pool play by splitting two sets with both Eastport-South Manor of Section XI 25-18, 22-25 and Penfield 17-25, 25-22. In the fifth set of the final, the Plainsmen led at one point 11-7 in the best-of-15.
In 2015, the Plainsmen qualified for state semifinal pool play, but were ousted before reaching the championship match. Shenendehowa had previously defeated Penfield earlier this season at the Penfield Invitational.
Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake fell in a Division II semifinal tiebreaker set to Bellmore JFK of Section VIII 25-21. Burnt Hills, Bellmore and Eden of Section VI each split four sets against each other in semifinal pool play. The Spartans faced Bellmore in the tiebreaker set because Eden advanced to the final with the most points. Eden defeated Bellmore JFK 25-18, 19-25, 21-25, 25-20, 15-8 to win the Division II state title.
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Hudson Falls advanced out of semifinal pool play and into Sunday’s Class B state championship game.
The Tigers won their last four semifinal sets to finish 4-2 in pool play and will face Owego of Section IV in the state final Sunday at 2 p.m. at Cool Insuring Arena (Glens Falls Civic Center).
In Class C, Voorheesville failed to make it out of semifinal pool play, going 1-5. Voorheesville took one set from Section XI’s Pierson 25-18.
Argyle finished Class D semifinal pool play 3-4, failing to advance to the state final after dropping a tiebreaker set against Bainbridge-Guilford of Section IV 25-13.
