MAYFIELD — Fire officials are continuing their investigation into a house fire that killed a man early Tuesday on Woodland Avenue.

The victim has not been identified.

Steven Santa Maria, director of the Fulton County Civil Defense Office/Fire Coordinators Office, said the fire at 157 Woodland Ave. was reported shortly after midnight. By the time firefighters arrived, the structure was engulfed in flames.

“Due to the heavy fire involvement and high heat, they could not do an interior attack,” Santa Maria said.

Santa Maria added that Mayfield firefighters, with assistance from Broadalbin, had the blaze under control in about an hour. Firefighters also hosed down the sides of houses next to the burning building, preventing the flames from spreading.

The house was destroyed in the fire. Woodland Avenue is near the Great Sacandaga Lake.
