SCHENECTADY — A city man used a machete to slash another man in the face in November, authorities said.

Ricky R. Carter, 48, was arrested recently on one count of first-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, felonies.

Carter is accused of slashing the victim just before noon Nov. 11 near the bus stop at State and Hulett streets, according to court documents.

The incident began as the victim spoke with someone at the stop and Carter pulled up in a truck and started yelling at the victim, prosecutor Nicolaus Brooks-McDonald said Thursday.

The victim had no idea what Carter was talking about, the prosecutor said.

“Our victim maintains that it was a case of complete mistaken identity,” Brooks-McDonald said.

The two wound up getting into a tussle, but Carter was armed with the machete and slashed the victim over his eye, causing a large cut, according to documents. Paramedics took the victim to Ellis Hospital for treatment.

Carter fled, but police ultimately tracked him down using the license plate on his truck, Brooks-McDonald said.

Carter appeared in City Court and was later released after witness issues prevented prosecutors from holding a hearing, Brooks-McDonald said.

The case now heads for grand jury consideration.
