STREAKING

Reigning state champ Tyler Barnes of Ballston Spa will bring an 80-match win streak into the 170-pound Division I competition. His run began in the consolation round at the 2016 state meet. The North Carolina State-bound senior went 41-0 last season, and he is 38-0 this season.

NY CHAMPS EYE RETURN

Barnes is among a trio of Section II wrestlers who are looking to get back to state tournament where they prevailed last season. He is joined by Schuylerville senior Orion Anderson, the 2017 Division II state champ at 120 pounds  who has moved up to 126, and Maple Hill junior Trent Svingala, the 2017 106-pound Division II state champ who has moved up to 120.

Anderson became just the third repeat state champ from Section II last year.

The Section II cast also includes 2017 state Division I 145-pound runner-up Kiernan Shanahan of Shenendehowa.

SEED LEADERS

Ballston Spa and Columbia, which won its first Section II Class A title Saturday, lead Division I with three No. 1 seeds. Ballston Spa’s No. 1s are Barnes (170), Jake Cook (182) and Jake Stangle (285). Columbia’s No. 1s are Michael Gonyea (126), Mikey Altomer (132) and Jake Edwards (152).

Warrensburg/Bolton has three No. 1 seeds in Division II in Nolan McNeil (182), Jack Binder (220) and Gary Hill (285).

Sixteen Section II programs have at least one No. 1 seed in the two divisions.

RETURNING CHAMPIONS

Several other wrestlers will be looking to add another Section II championship to their resume, including Brock DelSignore of South Glens Falls, Gonyea of Columbia, Eoghan Sweeney of Niskayuna, Cook of Ballston Spa, Stangle of Ballston Spa, Caleb Svingala of Maple Hill, Matt LaPorte of Hoosick Falls, Dan Motta of Mechanicville, Zach Lawrence of Duanesburg, and Dillan Palaszewski of Galway.

BACK-TO-BACK?

Billal Zamani will attempt to bring another Division I 132-pound title Schenectady’s way, after Deyker Edwards was best in that bracket a year ago. Zamani is the No. 2 seed behind Columbia’s Altomer, an eighth-grade standout who edged the Schenectady junior 7-6 in Saturday’s thrilling Class A title bout.

YOUTH OUT FRONT

Of 30 wrestlers slated to compete in Division I from 99 through 113 pounds, only one of them is a senior: 106-pound top seed Jordan Sartin of Saratoga Springs.
