With reference to the Feb. 17 letter, “Respect the office of the president”: While there was much that I (and I suspect a good many others) disagree with, one statement was spot on: “Respect the office that he holds.” It’s quite possible to hold respect for something inanimate. As for the animate, they need to earn respect.
