SCHENECTADY COUNTY — The Schenectady County Legislature this week awarded $60,000 in funding to 33 organizations to help pay for special events and arts programs in 2018.
The grants range from $4,000 to $500 each. The funding is coming from the county’s hotel/motel room occupancy tax, which has increased over the past year as new hotels have opened in the county.
“Schenectady County is so lucky to have such a vibrant arts community, and we’re proud to once again provide a record level of support to these worthy organizations, all at no cost to county taxpayers,” said county Legislator Cathy Gatta, D, chairwoman of the Legislature’s Committee on Tourism, Arts and Special Events.
The projects were judged by a community review panel that grades applications based on artistic merit, feasibility and perceived public benefit.
The largest awards, of $4,000 each, went to the Mabee Farm Canal Fest and Fall Foliage Festival, and to the Fourth of July concert at Mabee Farm with the Schenectady Symphony Orchestra. The Mabee Farm, on Route 5S in Rotterdam, is reputed to be the oldest house west of Schenectady in the Mohawk Valley; it is owned and operated by the Schenectady County Historical Society.
There is also money for summer concerts and movies at a number of locations around the county.
