High School Roundup: Win No. 400 for Vorgang

Mike Vorgang got his 400th win with Niskayuna varsity lacrosse.

Mike Vorgang, Section II’s career leader in boys’ lacrosse victories, reached another milestone Thursday when Niskayuna knocked off Albany 22-0 in the Surburban Council for the coach’s 400th varsity win.

Vorgang is the only head coach Niskayuna has had; he reached the mark in his 25th varsity season. His resume with the Silver Warriors also includes 15 Section II championships, 20 Section II finals and three state title-game appearances, with a New York title-game win in 2015.

Vorgang is a member of the Adirondack Chapter of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame and the La Salle Institute Hall of Fame. Vorgang played
lacrosse at La Salle and laSUNY Cortland.

Tyler Gregory collected three goals and seven assists for the 6-0 Silver Warriors, who are No. 7 in the state Class A rankings. Finn McCullough had four goals and three assists, and Drew Collins and David Guest both contributed three goals and one assist. Niskayuna led 17-0 at the half.

Bethlehem beat Averill Park 26-0. Jon Thibedeau led the Eagles with seven goals, while Liam Ferris added five.

Joe McDonald had five goals and an assist to lead Ballston Spa over Saratoga Springs 13-6. Zach Schuette chipped in three goals and four assists.

Shenendehowa beat CBA 12-9. Eric Makhatadze tallied four goals and two assists, while Pat Nagy added four goals.

Connor Quimby collected five goals and two assists to propel Guilderland past Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake 14-9. Gordy Adams had three goals and one assist for the Spartans.

John Hawkins scored six goals and assisted on a pair in Columbia’s 13-3 win versus Troy. Owen Stefanko added four goals and two assists.

In the Foothills Council, Queensbury (3-0, 8-0) secured a 14-6 win over Glens Falls. Dawson LaLuna totaled five goals and one assist for the Spartans. Hogan Fox had two goals and three assists for the Indians (2-1, 3-2).

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Bethlehem scored a Suburban Council win over Averill Park 16-4. Caroline Wise scored five goals for the Eagles, while Lindsey Ayres added three.

Ciara Mazzone’s seven goals lifted Columbia over Colonie 16-11. Rachel Morris added five goals and an assist.

Guilderland bested Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake 6-5. Jamie Golderman and Emily Burns each scored twice for the Dutchmen.

Sydney McPartlon recorded five goals and an assist in Niskayuna’s 22-1 win over Albany. Tori Pantalone, Annabelle Conover and Peyton Reihs each had four goals.

Joey Saia’s walk-off two-run home run gave Voorheesville (3-3, 4-3) a 5-3 Colonial Council win over Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk. Griffin Racey drove in a pair of runs for the Indians (2-3, 3-5).

Glens Falls beat Gloversville 11-4. Connor Girard drove in three runs for the Indians, while Kyle Vachon drove in two and scored two.

Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons won a Western Athletic Conference matchup with Fonda-Fultonville 6-3. Vinny Sorrentino struck out 12 batters for the Golden Knights and Christian Baaki had two hits and two RBIs.

Thomas Phelan recorded three hits, three runs and three RBIs in Waterford-Halfmoon’s 21-2 non-league win over New Lebanon. Jake Houle drove in four runs for the Fordians.

On Wednesday, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (2-2, 3-2) won a Suburban Council game with Schenectady 4-3. Chewy Stubblebine had a triple and two RBIs for the Spartans.
