Niskayuna Town Pool opens June 16

NISKAYUNA — The town pool is slated to open for the season on Saturday, June 16.

The unheated pool, located at 2682 Aqueduct Road, will follow two schedules.

For the early part of the summer, from June 16 to Aug. 5, the pool will be open noon to 7:45 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. on weekends.

Later in the summer — from Aug. 6 to Sept. 3 — residents will be able to swim from noon to 6:45 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the weekends.

Any closures will be posted and announced at the pool and on the town’s website.

Residents can sign up for memberships — both individual and family memberships are available — on the town website, niskayuna.org. Membership costs rang from $60 to $260.

Once on the site, people should click on “recreation program,” then click “online registration,” then click “aquatics,” and from there, click “pool memberships.”

Memberships are for residents of the town or school district. Those who live outside the town but pay Niskayuna school taxes are charged an $82 surcharge for memberships.

Daily rates for residents and their guests are $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 2 to 12. Non-residents are not admitted to the pool unless accompanied by a town resident.

“We’ve added some new lounge chairs and umbrellas; we’ve also added a ping-pong table and some large games,” said Lori Peretti, Niskayuna’s coordinator of community programs. “We’re trying to make it more family friendly.”

The place is already cooler friendly.

“You can bring in anything,” Peretti said. “We have a concession stand. You can bring in a cooler if you want to. You just can’t have glass bottles on the deck of the pool.”

No alcoholic beverages are allowed.

Those who prefer their cool water with fewer people might consider visits later in the day.

“During the day, it’s quite busy with lots of families,” Peretti said. “Toward dinner time, it tends to slow down a little bit — toward the end of the evening. It’s not dead, but it’s a lot slower from 6 until 8 p.m.”

The pool measures 2,390 square feet. The shallow end is 2 feet deep; the deep end is 11 feet deep. Peretti said 34 lifeguards will be on duty this summer, four on each shift.

The pool will close for the season at 2 p.m. on Labor Day.
