Spa City ceremony to mark Deer Spring restoration

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Department of Public Works will host a ceremony Friday to unveil restorations of Deer Spring in Congress Park.

The department restored the spring and worked with the Saratoga Springs History Museum to research its history.

“Restoring Deer Spring provides members of the public and citizens of Saratoga Springs with another wonderful space to enjoy in Congress Park,” Public Works Commissioner Anthony “Skip” Scirocco said in a prepared statement.

According to a brochure from the Saratoga Springs Visitor Center, the spring is “marked by a diminutive ornate green-and-white cast-iron monument,” and the water it spouts comes from a vein of the Congress Spring. In the late 1800s a rustic style Adirondack lodge stood at the south end of the park to house tame deer, and the Deer Spring was named for that once-popular attraction, according to the brochure.

Friday’s ceremony will include information about the fountain’s history and what repairs and restorations were made.

It will begin at noon in front of the spring, in Congress Park.
