SARATOGA SPRINGS – The Saratoga Casino Hotel will once again offer a free Independence Day fireworks show — on July 3 — following a five-year hiatus.
When the casino last hosted a fireworks show to commemorate the Fourth of July — in 2013 — a Phish concert was also taking place at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, said Skip Carlson, senior vice president of External Affairs.
“We use the Saratoga Springs Police Department for traffic control, and they were overwhelmed with both events being held on the same night,” he said. “We just felt it wasn’t working.”
According to a May 2014 Daily Gazette article, the Saratoga Harness Track’s July Fourth fireworks show was held for more than four decades before it ceased five years ago.
The show typically drew up to 20,000 spectators to the Saratoga Harness Track’s 161-acre property off Jefferson Street.
Carlson said this year, the casino decided to host a weeklong “All-American Celebration” from June 30 to July 7 and include the fireworks show.
“We said, ‘Let’s try them again,'” he said. “We spent more time planning the event and decided to use the holiday to our advantage and get people to come out to the property.
“It also helps give us a leg up on the competition, and it’s a good tradition for us to bring back.”
Rivers Casino in Schenectady will host its own fireworks show at 7 p.m. on July 4.
The Saratoga Casino Hotel fireworks will begin at 9:15 p.m. above the Saratoga Harness Track.
The event also features food vendors and musicians, as well as a live racing card starting at 5 p.m.
