Burnt Hills among Kerr Cup champs

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake scored best among all Class A schools and placed fourth overall behind Shenendehowa, North Rockland and first-time winner Victor in the New York State Sportswriters Association’s annual Kerr Cup All-Sport Championship.

Burnt Hills led the boys’ and girls’ Class A combined scoring for the seventh time in 10 years with 46.33 points. Points are assigned based on results from New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship tournaments and meets. Scoring is based on the first eight places (15-10-8-6-4-3-2-1).

Burnt Hills was bolstered by a strong showing in the fall, when its boys’ cross country team won a state title and its football, field hockey and both volleyball teams reached the state semifinals. In all, the Spartans scored points in seven different sports.

Shenendehowa scored in nine different boys’ and girls’ sports, accumulating 49.33 points for its third-place overall performance behind North Rockland (56.33) and Victor (73). Both of Shenendehowa’s volleyball teams reached the state championship matches, and its boys’ soccer team was a state semifinalist.

Victor set Kerr Cup All-Sport Championship records for points and margin of victory by virtue of becoming the only school in 10 years to lead the scoring for both boys (36) and girls (37).

Shenendehowa has the longest active streak of top-10 appearances in the overall competition with five straight. Burnt Hills has made it three years in a row and North Rockland twice. Shenendehowa won three straight overall titles from 2015-17, and Burnt Hills strung four from 2009-12 (with a tie in 2011).

Burnt Hills was second in the boys’ Class A scoring (30.33), one spot ahead of Queensbury (30.17). Shenendehowa was third in the boys’ Class AA scoring (24.17), and Mekeel Christian Academy was tied for third in the boys’ Class D scoring. Shenendehowa was fourth in the girls’ Class AA scoring (25.17).
