GLENVILLE — The Town of Glenville has built an outdoor gym in Indian Meadows Park with a variety of machines.

Town Supervisor Chris Koetzle said that a trip to Myrtle Beach inspired him to build the facility.

“I was on vacation in Myrtle Beach a couple of years ago, and my wife and I were running down the beach and we came across this trail, and every so often, they had different pieces of equipment,” Koetzle said. “So I texted our Head of Operations, Jamie [McFarland], and said, ‘We should do something like this in our park.’ It’s taken a couple of years to raise the money, but the inspiration was kind of that we came across it on a vacation.”

The project cost came out to $10,000, most of which was raised by the YMCA, the Glenville Rotary, and the Clink recycling company, with the Glenville Highway Department taking on the cost of construction.

The equipment is meant to be durable enough to last throughout the New York winters, with weather resistance built in to each of the machines, such as shoulder presses and ellipticals.

Koetzle added that the machines are easy to use.

“It’s great for the seniors in particular,” he said.

The facility comes in addition to an expansion of the trails in the park, part of Koetzle’s initiative to improve Indian Meadows and increase access to health and wellness activities.
