Dog missing six days rescued from Thacher Park cliff

THACHER PARK — A dog lost for nearly a week in Thacher Park has been pulled from a ledge — alive and well — by rescuers.

Khaos, a 2-year-old black and red German shepherd from East Berne, went missing the morning of July 17 while on a walk with his owner.

Park officials searched for the dog, including posting alerts to social media. On Sunday, a woman reported hearing Khaos barking and then led the dog’s owner, Laurence Wolfe to the spot.

The Albany County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team then stepped in and pulled the dog out safe, Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple tweeted Tuesday afternoon.

“He wandered away and fell off a cliff days ago,” Apple wrote. “Someone heard him, and we picked him off a ledge! Great job team. Now he’s reunited with his owner.”

Reached Tuesday afternoon, Wolfe said Khaos is doing fine, despite the ordeal. He has a cut above his eye and lost about 10 percent of his body weight, but he is otherwise OK.

“He’s happy, as are we,” Wolfe said. “He’s a trooper. He’s a survivor.”

Wolfe thanked all those involved with the rescue, calling them phenomenal.

Thacher Park officials announced the development on the park’s Facebook page Tuesday afternoon and also expressed their gratitude.

“A huge thank you to everyone involved in getting him back to his owner, including the Albany County Sheriffs Office, Hilltown DCO extraordinaire Cheryl Baitsholts, the entire staff here at the park, and all of you for your countless shares!!” the park’s page stated.
