SARATOGA SPRINGS — City Hall departments have relocated throughout the city due to water and fire damage following a lightning strike on Friday.
City Fire Chief Robert Williams said he believes the energy from the lightning went into a “vent pipe” on the roof and super-heated it to “thousands of degrees” in temperature, igniting combustible materials inside the building.
While most city employees have moved to the City Recreation facility at 15 Vanderbilt Ave., Mayor Meg Kelly said several essential employees have relocated to the Saratoga Springs Fire Department at 60 Lake Ave.
The Department of Public Works employees are split between a garage on Van Rensselaer Street and Canfield Casino in Congress Park.
Kelly said no one is allowed in City Hall until further notice. The Saratoga Springs Police Department was continuing operations on the ground floor of City Hall at 5 Lake Ave.
“The plan is in place so everyone knows where they’ll be,” she said regarding the City Emergency Management Plan. “Everything is outlined in the plan and is running beautifully.”
According to Kelly, Williams is providing daily updates on the building.
On Monday, Kelly said damaged floors, carpets and ceilings were being removed from City Hall.
Commissioner of Public Safety Peter Martin said that department was looking for space on Monday.
“We should be able to announce it at [Tuesday’s] City Council meeting,” he said.
Martin said some of the Public Safety staff has moved to the Fire Department.
The state Office of Court Administration moved the City Court system, which includes collections, to the Lincoln Baths, at 65 South Broadway.
Kelly said that, while the fire has affected employees and operations, she remains optimistic.
“We’re all working together, and hopefully we’re building more tea work in City Hall,” she said. “We’ll get through it.”
The City Council meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday will take place at the Saratoga Springs City Center.
