Ballston Spa schools placed on brief lockout due to chase

The lockout lasted for about an hour, the district said.

The Ballston Spa Central School District went into lock-out at two schools Wednesday morning, due to a police search in the area, according to the district and sheriff’s department.

The search took place in woods behind Ballston Spa’s middle and high school complex and concerned a driver who fled the scene of a nearby accident on foot, Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo said. A witness to the accident saw the driver flee into the woods and notified authorities.

Zurlo described the lockout as precautionary. It was lifted after deputies searched the area and determined no one remained. No individual was found.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Zurlo said that the department had no suspects.

“At this point, we’ve cleared the area and it’s under investigation,” Zurlo said. “We’re actively pursuing some leads here.”

The lockout lasted for about an hour, the district said. The district lifted it by 10 a.m.

Lockouts are generally where individuals are prevented from entering, but for those inside,  the school day goes on as normal.

Both the middle and high school complex, along with the Wood Road Elementary School,  were affected by the incident, according to the district.

At the time of the lockout, just before 9 a.m. Wednesday, the district said students arriving in buses were to remain in the vehicles, and no visitors were permitted inside the building.
