HALFMOON — Thieves made off with wheels from a dozen cars from a Halfmoon car lot sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning, leaving the vehicles sitting on rocks, officials said.

The incident happened at New Country Toyota of Clifton Park on Route 236 in Halfmoon. A car lot manager in to do some work Sunday morning spotted the damage and alerted the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office, New Country Toyota of Clifton Park general manager Michael Raucci said. The lot is normally closed Sundays.

In all, employees counted 12 cars and trucks where thieves had taken some or all of the wheels and tires, Raucci said.

Raucci posted photos of the damage to his Facebook page late Sunday morning, showing the damage and asking anyone who may have seen something to come forward. His post had been shared more than 1,000 times and garnered more than 370 comments in the first six hours after posting.

His post also addressed the thieves themselves: “To the dirtbags that decided to shop when we were closed last night and vandalize and steal from us we will catch you!”

Investigators from the sheriff’s department spent much of the day Sunday on the case, gathering evidence and conducting interviews, Sheriff Michael Zurlo said.

Zurlo asked that anyone with information contact the sheriff’s office at 518-885-6761.

The full extent of the damage had yet to be calculated by Sunday afternoon, Raucci said. In addition to the missing wheels, some vehicles sustained other damage, Raucci said.

As for his reaction, Raucci called it “just disappointing.”

“I can’t believe that someone or a group of people would just be that rude and just have no respect for personal property,” he said.
