Michigan Avenue bridge work done

Construction that has hampered traffic all summer on the Michigan Avenue bridge is shown in October.

CAPITAL REGION — The $3.5 million rehabilitation of the Michigan Avenue bridge over Interstate-890 in Schenectady is finished, state officials announced Friday.

Also completed was a bridge that carries state Route 5S over the Terwilliger Creek in the town on Florida in Montgomery County.

The announcement said the Michigan Avenue project, which began in October 2017, has enhanced safety and added another 25 years of life to the bridge, which connects the Hamilton Hill and Mont Pleasant neighborhoods. The project replaced the bridge deck and girders, upgraded sidewalks approaching the bridge in both directions and added sidewalk ramps compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The work closed shoulders and sometimes lanes on I-890.

The Michigan Avenue bridge was built in 1962. It carries about thousands of vehicles per day, DOT records show.

On the Route 5S bridge over Terwilleger Creek in the town of Florida, just east of Amsterdam, the state wrapped up a $1.68 million project that added a new, pre-cast concrete bridge deck and strengthened abutments. A new guard rail was also installed and stone fill was added around the abutments to prevent scour and guard against flooding, state officials said. An average of about 2,600 vehicles per day use that bridge, according to DOT statistics.

While the bridges are now open, state officials said there may still be some minor work as contractors complete work at the locations.
