Forget those sugarplums and candy canes. They are so 20th century.

When it comes to holiday food gifts, what your loved ones really want to find under the tree is garlic, jalapeno, habanero, siracha, kim chi, chipotle and horseradish. America is no longer the land of the bland. We love a little zing in our tacos, burgers and sandwiches.

In 2014, the restaurant market research firm Technomic reported that a majority of Americans, 54 percent, like hot or spicy foods, sauces, dips, and condiments. That’s up from 48 percent in 2011 and 46 percent in 2009.
