COLONIE — A 61-year-old woman was killed Tuesday evening when she was hit by a car on Troy-Schenectady Road, Colonie police said.
She was identified Wednesday as Janet A. Nittoli of New York City. Police said Nittoli appears to have been living in the Capital Region for at least the last few months, possibly using homeless shelters at times.
The accident happened at about 7:15 p.m. near the intersection with Swatling Road in Latham, police said.
A car headed west on Troy-Schenectady Road struck the woman as she walked in the roadway, police said. The driver, a 57-year-old man from Troy, immediately stopped and called police. The woman died at the scene.
The driver was not injured, and police have ruled out impaired driving as a factor. The crash remained under investigation Wednesday. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact police at 518-783-2744.
Colonie EMS responded, along with the Latham and Boght fire departments. Troy-Schenectady Road was restricted to one lane in each direction for a time as the investigation continued.
