Police: Car stolen from Glenville crashes in Schenectady

SCHENECTADY — A car stolen in Glenville Sunday crashed into a parked car in Schenectady Wednesday night, police said.

The crash happened just after 10 p.m. on Santa Fe Street, and the driver — a boy younger than 16 — fled officers on foot, city police spokesman Sgt. Matthew Dearing said. Officers captured the driver within two minutes of the crash, Dearing said.

Wednesday night’s events began as city police checked an area for the car that had been reported stolen in Glenville, Dearing said.

They spotted it and tried to pull it over, but the driver fled, Dearing said. The officers did not give chase, Dearing said, but the car soon crashed on Santa Fe.

Both vehicles appeared significantly damaged, but Dearing said the boy was not injured. He is expected to face charges in Family Court.

The car had originally been reported stolen Sunday afternoon from the Target parking lot on Route 50, Glenville Police Lt. Michael Petroski said. The car owner, a Saratoga County resident, went into the store, but left the keys in the 1996 Toyota Corolla. When the shopper returned, the car was gone.

The teen in the Schenectady crash, however, does not appear to have been involved in taking the car in Glenville, Petroski said, citing video evidence from the scene of the theft.
