PITTSBURGH — The Union men’s hockey team has struggled to handle success this season.
After beating top-ranked St. Cloud State 7-3 in the Three Rivers Classic semifinals on Friday, the Dutchmen faced ECAC Hockey-foe Brown in Saturday’s championship game.
The contest started a half-hour late. The 14th-ranked Dutchmen were even later to arrive.
Tournament most valuable player Alex Brink scored two of Brown’s four first-period goals, sparking the Bears to a 6-3 victory over the Dutchmen at PPG Paints Arena.
This was the third instance this season in which the Dutchmen (10-5-4) failed pulled off a clunker. After starting the season 4-0, they were swept by RPI. Following their Friendship Four championship victory in late November, they were tied by Brown and lost to Yale in December.
And it happened again against Brown. Only this time, it was much worse as the Bears (5-7-3) raced out to a 4-0 lead, with three of their goals coming on special teams.
Brown took advantage of a Greg Campbell hooking penalty 1:41 into the game when Tommy Marchin fired a shot from the top of the right circle past goalie Darion Hanson.
Brink scored the next two goals for the Bears. The first, an even-strength tally at 9:46, was a bad goal. Brink was skating behind the net from the right wing when he bounced the buck off of Hanson’s left skate and into the net.
Just over three minutes later, Brink chased Hanson from the game with a shorthanded goal. Jake Kupsky replaced Hanson, but he didn’t fare much better as the Bears scored another shorthanded goal. Zack Giuttari got it on a 3-on-1 break.
Jack Adams got a goal for Union late in the first. That goal seemed to spark the Dutchmen as they got second-period power-play goals from Anthony Rinaldi and Lucas Breault.
But with 31 seconds left in the second, Jack Gessert fired a shot from the bottom of the right circle over Kupsky’s shoulder to give Brown a 5-3 lead.
Marchin sealed the Bears win on an empty-net goal with 41 seconds left.
Union forward Parker Foo, who had a goal against St. Cloud State and two assists against Brown, was named to the all-tournament team.
The Dutchmen return to ECACH play next weekend when they visit Clarkson and St. Lawrence.
