An unidentified Dutchess County man died Friday night after authorities say he was “ejected” from his snowmobile on the Great Sacandaga Lake.
The accident occurred about 11:30 p.m. on Friday on the Broadalbin side of the lake. No other injuries were reported.
An identity of the man was being withheld until relatives had been notified, according to the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday.
Emergency dispatchers received their first call of the incident at 11:34 p.m. According to witnesses, the man’s snowmobile struck a pressure ridge on the lake, not uncommon this time of year when freezing temperatures can lead to buckling in the ice surface.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene by Fulton County Coroner Maggie Luck, according to sheriff’s deputies.
The sheriff’s office used the incident to remind the public that numerous hazards on the lake exist this time of year, and to use caution while snowmobiling on the lake.
Assisting at the scene Friday were state police, Broadalbin and Mayfield fire departments, Fulton County Ambulance Service, Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Fulton County Fire Coordinator’s Office.
